WonderFL – Escambia County
In the northwestern tip of the Florida Panhandle, bordered by Alabama, Escambia County is a gateway into Florida. Escambia, coining the title of the “oldest county in Florida,” has a unique history of being founded by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. While the history may run deep in Escambia, the county still has something for all ages and walks of life.
For any Floridian, Escambia County has a hallmark of its own for being the home of the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels are a flight squadron from the United States Navy that showcases their flights for the public. In their performances, the Blue Angels make daring and spectacular flight formations. The county is also home to The National Naval Aviation Museum, where spectators can learn about the history of aviation and the role that naval aviation has played in the history of the United States and Pensacola.
In recent years, Pensacola, the county’s largest city, has revitalized its downtown to be an attractive destination for everyone. In Downtown Pensacola, a person can tour the Pensacola Museum of Art, which exhibits modern and contemporary art from as early as the nineteenth century. Another downtown classic is shopping at the award-winning Palafox Market, where local vendors can sell their products and goods. Downtown Pensacola is also home to many gourmet restaurants, sports teams, and beautiful architecture, so there are plenty of activities to help residents and visitors have a memorable stay.
Escambia County is also home to beautiful beaches and parks, one of which is Fort Pickens. Fort Pickens hosted the Battle of Santa Rosa Island in the Civil War, but the fort was originally commissioned to be built after the War of 1812. It is also located on one of the many beaches in Escambia County, so visitors will surely stay busy.
