These words from Booker T. Washington still resonate on the Emerald Coast, from coastal Mexican dining at Burrito Del Sol in Fort Walton Beach and Destin to music and culture festivals that celebrate Caribbean lifestyle in Tallahassee. The people who live in Northwest Florida hail from all backgrounds and the veteran population in Northwest Florida is especially large with thousands of exiting military personnel each year. Pensacola also has its own gay beach two miles past the Gulf Island National Seashore sign, and the city’s Gay Memorial Day Weekend draws thousands to the beach annually.

Celebrating Where We’re From

From Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto State Archeological site in Tallahassee to the childhood home and museum of the first Black four-star general in American military history “Chappie” James in Pensacola, Northwest Florida celebrates its rich tapestry of barrier-breaking individuals. The Carver-Hill Museum and May Day Festival honors the history of the African American community in Crestview and several historic sites throughout Pensacola celebrate the area’s rich Spanish-Colonial heritage.
