WonderFL – Holmes County

Serving as one of the gateways into Florida, Holmes County has a unique story from the beginning. In 1848, Holmes County was created by pulling together land from Calhoun and Walton Counties. The story of how the county received its name holds controversy, but nonetheless, this quaint county provides great adventure, fun events, and so much more.

Perhaps one of the most popular events held in Holmes County is the Annual Bonifay Rodeo. This rodeo is every October and features all of the rodeo musts, such as bull riding, barrel racing and even mutton busting. To make the events even more enjoyable, the rodeo also hosts an annual 5K, pancake breakfast and parade.

If the rodeo is not enough adventure, try Vortex Springs located in Ponce de Leon. At the spring, a person can camp on the campsites, swim in the spring, or even dive at the diving facility, which happens to be the largest in Florida. This spring is perfect to keep a visitor cool in the hot, Florida sun.

If adventure is not on the bucket list, Holmes County is also full of historical landmarks. One of those landmarks is the Keith Cabin. This cabin is a 1800s style, wooden cabin that is known for its architectural design and durability. The residence has also been in Holmes County since its origin, so this spot is the perfect excursion for a Florida history lover.

Whether the visitor is a history buff or adventure seeker, Holmes County has something for everyone. Whether it be a visit to the springs, a great day at the rodeo or a historical visit to the past, Holmes County is ready for a visit!
