WonderFL – The Capital Region
A major highlight of Northwest Florida is that there is a wide range of things to do and places to see. One area that is pretty unique to Florida is the Capital Region that includes Leon, Wakulla and Gadsden Counties. Not only is this area home to Florida’s capital in Tallahassee, but it is also the hub of many Floridian favorites such as Wakulla County’s famous outdoor excursions and some of Florida’s most prestigious colleges.
One of the many popular sites in the Capital Region is the St. Marks Lighthouse found in Wakulla County. This lighthouse stands at 82 feet tall, overlooking the Apalachee Bay and serves as the second oldest light station in Florida. At the lighthouse, a person can go inside and discover the history that the landmark holds, as well as follow the St. Marks trail that runs throughout the Capital Region near the lighthouse.
Around the corner from the St. Marks Lighthouse is Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. FSU serves as a major university in the Panhandle, but what a visitor might not know is that FSU is home to the Flying High Circus. This circus is a major facet for aspiring performers that are Florida State students. From acrobatics to dare devil stunts, the circus is definitely a must see in Tallahassee.
Another must see in the Capital Region is the famous Ochlockonee River. This river runs through the region of Wakulla and Gadsden counties. “The Ochlockonee” as locals would call it, is famous for boating, kayaking and swimming. The water is a mix of freshwater and saltwater making it a hot spot for diverse wildlife. The river also serves as a state park, so it is perfect for camping or a scenic day trip.
Whether a day by the water or a trip to the circus sounds like fun, the Capital Region is definitely a must-see place. From acrobatics to historic lighthouses, this region is ready for a visit!
